Domaine Grand Veneur Clos de Sixte – Lirac Southern Rhone, France 2007
93RP Composed of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre. Abundant licorice, graphite, black cherry, and blackberry characteristics are offered in a full-bodied, deep, fleshy style. It is a big, impressively endowed wine. Dark and ripe, with plum and crushed currant fruit flavours gliding over chalky mineral, tobacco and floral notes. There's an alluring touch of spice on the velvety finish. *This wine really opens up when decanted.
$60 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Veneto, Italy 2006
Showing deep ruby red, it releases intense aromas laden with rich spice and dried fruit; in the mouth it is a wine of superb richness. 94WS Wonderful aromas of black licorice and blueberry lead to a full body, with juicy, round tannins. Luscious and decadent. A gorgeous wine, this is the real deal for Amarone.
